Destroyed symbols

Mariupol is a Ukrainian city by the sea with an ocean of new opportunities that has been turned into ruins by the Russian occupiers. It has become a symbol of shattered dreams and numerous losses.

Before the full-scale invasion, Mariupol was one of the most promising cities in Ukraine. In 2015, the city began to change rapidly, choosing a course of strategic development. In a short period of time, grey industrial Mariupol has transformed into a vibrant city of new opportunities, a worth living in and building a happy future. The people of Mariupol were proud of their city, which was reborn and became a real cultural and economic discovery on the map of Ukraine.

Mariupol became a symbol of the revived Ukrainian Donbas and had plans to become a dream city. But this dream was destroyed by the Russian occupiers. From the very first days of the full-scale invasion, they encircled the city, firing mercilessly at it with all kinds of weapons, killing everything Ukrainian in their path. Residential buildings, civilian neighbourhoods, hospitals, humanitarian warehouses, schools, rehabilitation centres, kindergartens, maternity hospitals, municipal transport, municipal enterprises... 90% of the city sustained various types of damage, thousands of buildings have been destroyed.

During the 86 days of the blockade, Mariupol suffered more damage than during the years of occupation in World War II. Two times as many civilians were killed. The Russians brought the hell of war, losses and pain to the city... Mariupol turned from a city of new opportunities into a city of shot dreams and great mourning.
