Human losses

Russian troops have turned the Ukrainian city of Mariupol into ruins. During 86 days of total siege, the city bravely held its defence, but the occupiers ruthlessly destroyed it, taking the lives of thousands of civilians and defenders.

The bodies of the dead were buried in courtyards, parks, in mass and unmarked graves, and many remained under the rubble. The exact number of victims is still impossible to determine, as people died not only from shelling, but also from their wounds, lack of medicine and inability to receive medical care due to the constant bombing of the city.

The Mariupol City Council team works daily to gather information to determine the number of war victims. As of today, information has been collected on 9 280 Mariupol residents died, but this figure is not final.

Based on the collected testimonies, the possible locations of death of thousands of Mariupol residents have been identified, which has made it possible to mark them on the map. However, this list includes Mariupol residents whose places of death or disappearance could not be established. Therefore, data collection continues. We will not stop until we gather complete information about the tragedy of our city.

Mariupol remembers and honours not only those who died in the city, but also the defenders who gave their lives defending Ukraine on various sectors of the front line.

To preserve the memory of each soldier, the Mariupol Local History Museum, in cooperation with the Department of Cultural and Social Development and on the initiative of the organisation Women of Steel, has created a virtual Book of Remembrance. This is a place where we collect the stories of our heroes.

Memorialisation of memory is an expression of boundless respect and gratitude to those who defended our freedom, dignity and future at the cost of their own lives. This gratitude will live in the hearts of every Mariupol resident forever.

We remember everyone. No one will be forgotten!
